About Us

Granville Multicultural Community Centre (GMCC) is a non-profit community organisation working in the Parramatta, Holroyd and Auburn areas. Our aim is “To make a real and positive difference to all members of our community by providing appropriate, accessible community services.”

GMCC offers a variety of services, along with educational and social activities to residents. We receive funding from a number of government departments and other sources. Our programs are designed to meet the needs and interests of local people.

We provide assistance and support to families in crisis, children, young people, the elderly, people who are lonely, and people who are struggling financially. If we are unable to help, we will find the information or link to another service.

Our services are open to everyone and we are proud of our work with diverse communities. Some programs have geographic boundaries that they work within.

Ideas and opinions on the type of services and activities needed from GMCC are welcome.

Funding

GMCC receives funding from the following sources:

  • NSW Department of Community Services
  • NSW Department of Education and Training
  • NSW Office of Fair Trading
  • Federal Department of Families, Communities and Indigenous Affairs

We also receive funding for short term and one off projects from local government and clubs.

Organisational Structure

GMCC is an incorporated association managed by a volunteer management committee. The Management Committee is elected each year at our Annual General Meeting. The Manager is responsible for the day to day management of GMCC, and is supported by two team leaders. We have a constitution, and a strategic plan which is reviewed every three years.

GMCC has approximately 16 permanent staff, and numerous part time staff. We have around 15 casuals we use on a regular basis.

History

GMCC was established in 1977 as the ‘The Holy Family East Granville Multicultural Centre’. The main aim at the centre then was to bridge the gap between the migrant school community and the school. The centre was based in Clyde Street. Services included English classes, counselling, information, interpreting, preschool activities, Arabic and Italian classes and a Lebanese liaison officer. It was clear from the early days that there was a need for a community centre to offer a range of services and activities to the community at large.

In 1981, the centre changed its name to Granville Multicultural Centre Inc, and continued to operate out of Clyde St. Other venues were also used as the space available did not meet the needs of the organisation. To meet the needs of the general community, and to be eligible for government funding, the centre became independent from the church and became an incorporated association, managed by a volunteer community based management committee. The first Annual General Meeting was held in 1982. Services expanded to include sewing and driving classes, car maintenance and resuscitation courses, vacation care, craft and self defence for children.

In 1993, the centre moved from Clyde St to 8 Factory St; a heritage listed building with its own long history. In 1996, the centre changed its name to Granville Multicultural Community Centre Inc, and services spread to include surrounding areas, including Holroyd and Auburn. Applications for funding were made to the Western Sydney Area Assistance Scheme for Family Support, a Youth worker and the Preschool – and these services continue today.

Over time we have developed, our name has changed, and we have become an independently incorporated organisation. Our history demonstrates the long commitment that the organisation has had to working with a wide range of communities.
